Got Two Free Books in Spanish During El Dia del Libro

Here's my loot during the El Dia del Libro 2019. I was able to get two free books in Spanish because I bought two shirts.  I got a copy of Los Ecuadernos de Don Rigoberto by Nobel Prize winner for Literature Mario Vargas Llosa and this book about the movies of my favorite Spanish director Pedro Almodovar.

A Fun Day at El Dia Del Libro Courtesy of Instituto Cervantes Manila

I was able to attend the El Dia del Libro again this year courtesy of Instituto Cervantes.  It was held again this year at the Ayala Triangle Gardens.  There were booths from all the known publishers and booksellers here in the Philippines.

Movie Review: Music of Silence Flounders and Disappoints

Last week, before the Avengers' Endgame juggernaut hit Manila's theaters, a fictionalized film about the life of pop-opera singer Andrea Bocelli was shown here in Manila for about 4 days.

I am a very big fan of Andrea Bocelli, since his music is the soundtrack of a very important time of my life - my college graduation and my first job.

I learned later, through this movie that while I was still starting with my adult life, Andrea was also starting his musical career.

He has since become a major star in the music world. He came here in Manila for a concert and that was the first time I heard of concert tickets selling at PhP25,000 each - and this was in the 90s pa.

I have followed his subsequent career and I have bought all his albums including the latest one, Si, which is running in my personal list as one of the best albums of 2019.

So I was expecting the film to mirror the beauty of the songs in his latest album (the album is very personal, it's about his family - the songs which he sings with his grown up son are very beautiful).

Alas, it is a plodding piece of cinema which are irritating in some parts. Now I also understand why some A-list actors are in the A-list - because they have the ability to uplift terrible direction and an inert script to something which is bearable to watch.

Antonio Banderas, who appears towards the end of the movie, uses his A-list talent to make the movie interesting. His presence is commanding and I wished he came earlier on in the film to show the struggles Tobey Sebastian's character has to endure to become a world-class opera singer.

There are some beautiful scenes - like the one where Tobey sings Libiamo in a bar, or when his uncle cuts down a music critic - but they are few and far between.

While Queen's Bohemian Rhapsody was joyful and triumphant - with everyone leaving the theater with a big smile on their faces - this one - well, I left with a bit of boredom and sadness because of the lost opportunity.

I hope they still make another film about Andrea Bocelli's life. They can focus on his current family and how he raised his kids and how his sons struggle under the shadow of a very famous father. There should be enough conflict there.

At least the final song buoyed my spirits up. The film closed with Con Te Partiro - my college graduation theme song. I can still sing the song up to now, even with its Italian lyrics. It sounded majestic in the theater with all those Dolby speakers blaring.

German Werkbund Exhibit: A Collection of Posters

I collect posters and these posters from the German Werkbund are the ones I'm interested in. Usually, I find them in museums and in curio shops in the cities I visit.
The more interesting the message, the better.
For example, the leftmost poster rejects the ostentatious items used in a living space, and opts for a more environment-friendly but severe-looking living spaces which often echoes Japanese minimalism - where form follows function and any superfluous item is immediately banished.
And these can be seen in the interior designs that they did.

Masterpieces by Local Sculptors Shown Alongside German Werkbund

In tandem with the German Werkbund exhibition are some of the top sculptors and designs by leading Filipino sculptors.
Easily identifiable are Ramon Orlina's carved green glass object and Impy Pilapil's tall glass and stone sculpture.
Claude Tayag's wavy narra creation would be perfect in a reception area or in one's living room.
Honrado Fernandez's ceremonial chair and Solomon Saprid's tikbalang chair can be good conversation pieces as well as something to sit on while talking about it.

My Memories of Notre Dame

I know this may sound cruel but I think this fire is good for France and for Paris.
When we went inside the church, there was a mass, but there were more tourists than mass attendees. You'd be shocked to see people taking pictures, clicking here and there while the service was going on - we were in a cordoned area.
So this fire can be good for France, and for Parisians, because at least now, when the church is rebuilt, more of them would be attending the masses there and finally outnumber the tourists.
God works in mysterious ways.
No wonder I remember the flying buttresses and the gargoyles more. We had a great time looking at them!
Those are the gargoyles in that picture where I epic fail made the gargoyle face. And the scarier ones are on top pa talaga, you have to climb 300+ steps ata to reach it.
I hope that part didn't get burned!

Notre Dame: Its Flying Buttresses and Gargoyles

I put together two photos of the the Notre Dame and the burning church. Looks like it was the roof that was burned and the interior.
The flying buttresses and hopefully, the gargoyles are safe.
I just hope the steps towards the gargoyles are still passable. I remember it was just stone so I hope it is still there.
The gargoyles are the most fun to see! I am not sure though if they still allow people to go up because none of the recent pics of friends who went there have pictures of the gargoyles.
Most of the pictures of my friends here are from the front but for me, the most spectacular view of Notre Dame is actually this one, its flying buttresses - which you can see if you cross to the island beside Ile de la Cite.
It is my most favorite part of Paris, my secret tambayan when I'm bored with watching tennis. My dream house is actually in that island, and I go there to pretend I live there - even only if it's for an afternoon LOL
Of course, I learned later on that only the very wealthy can live on that island. Anyhow, it must have been a shock for the residents to see the grand church burning.

Paul: My Family's New Favorite Restaurant

My order! pork chop!

Mama's order - roasted chicken - again!

The kids' order - their favorite - salmon!

Hands down, the most yummy of all! Our new favorite dish especially that they all love shrimps!
I introduced Paul, the restaurant at their branch in SM Aura, to my family a few weeks ago, and they found the food yummy and affordable, that's why we went back to it again this week.  It has become the new favorite restaurant of our family.  At least the prices are reasonable.

The kids and my brother love the mango tart, unfortunately, only two were left when we arrived, we could've eaten more.  This time I ordered the pork chop which was lean and tender.  I was also able to eat the chicken since Mama gave me the drumstick part.  No blood, thank God! And it was of generous size and juicy as well.  Our favorite though was the shrimp pasta as the flavours of the shrimp and the garlic had permeated into the sauce and the pasta resulting in a delicious taste!

I want to eat their egg Benedict again since I ate that last time.  I hope they open in our side of Quezon City (Trinoma, Vertis, UP Town Center) soon.

Restaurant Review: My Taste Buds Still Have to Adjust to the Malay Food Offerings of Roti Shop

Beef rendang - my favorite! But this one's really spicy!

Laksa! Another favorite of mine!  Again, this is also spicy!

What's left of the Hainanese chicken, lol! This one was yummy!

Milo Dinosaur! My favorite!
We were in Rockwell Makati yesterday and I was surprised by the large number of people in the mall.  Anyway, for lunch, I decided to treat Mama and Dylan to the Roti Shop, since it was very near the CR and I did not want Mama to walk far anymore.

I like the ambiance of the resto - very cozy and it's nice that you can see people walk by.

I decided on our old favorites - laksa, roasted Hainanese chicken and beef rendang.  For drinks, I always order Coke regular and this time, I also asked for my favorite - Milo Dinosaur.

This is our first time to eat here since we rarely go to Rockwell but we are familiar with Malay food which is slowly becoming popular here in Manila.

Dylan easily finished his roasted Hainanese chicken.  He ingested the hot sauce though - I think it was the orange one - and he panicked since he is not familiar with spicy sauces.  I told him to just dip his for first on the sauces and taste it one by one - because we are not sure how they taste.  E bata kasi - kaya yan, he drank a lot of cold water to stave off the spicy taste - and I promptly told him that the cold water is making matters worse!

The beef rendang was also spicy but the beef was tender which is a plus.  The laksa, again spicy, so Mama, who is not really into spicy food, just made tikim.  I had to eat both though and kulang sa linamnam. I guess my Pinoy taste buds have gotten on the way again.

I don't think it would be a good thing to 'Filipinize' the flavor though because I saw that they had a sizable expat fan base.

Anyway, if I do visit again, I'd like to try their other dishes like the nasi lemak and the seafood laksa!
