Finding Ways to Tame My Weekly Budget - June 2019

I have had to tame my expenses this week as my earning power has gone to zilch again this week.  It makes me so worried. Anyway, here is the rundown of my expenses this wee from June 22-29, that's an 8-day stretch.

Loans - 5000 pesos - 42%
Food - 2954 - 25%
Fare - 2212 - 19%
Massage - 1170 - 10%
Meds - 2%
Toiletries - 2%
Tithing - 1%
load - 1%

Total Expenses = 11,826 pesos

1478 per day

The loans will be there till October so I cannot change that.  The food averages 369 pesos per day and that includes dinner out with friends.  The fare including Grab averages 276 pesos per day.  And of course, my weekly massage.

What I can do for next week is take out the massage, lower my food expense to 60 pesos fruits and 40 pesos for the rice and 3 eggs.  For the meantime, that will be my food for the day. One hundred pesos expense per day.  As for the fare, no more Grab this coming week except on Sundays and days when I am with Mama. Otherwise, use public transport.

I have no loan to pay this coming week so I am a bit relaxed but I have to pay my gym, maybe the tarp as well and the water bill. Those are the most important bills this week. My Facebook bill is already at 2700 pesos so I might have to pay that as well. Tsk tsk.

So many challenges.  Anyway, I am glad I am writing this down so everything is clear!  Let's see how much I can save next week.

RIP Eddie Garcia

RIP Eddie Garcia.
Because of you, I became a Noranian lol
Mr. Garcia directed Atsay, a film which won him Best Director in the 1978 MMFF (yes, the MMFF used to respectable, now they only have Vice Ganda's basura movies), a Best Performer award for Nora Aunor, who in this movie, stars with Mona Lisa and Nora's perennial oppressor, Armida Siguion-Reyna (RIP as well madame), who played her roles wickedly, she was reviled by the Noranians (her characters, not her).
I think this was the movie that showed that Nora Aunor can really act and being the director of the movie, Mr. Garcia must have relished the fact that he was handling the creme de la creme of acting.
I guess he was also the reason why the movie didn't drown in melodrama. There is a beautiful scene towards the end where Mona Lisa confronts Nora - an amazing scene which today's forgettable reality TV winners can learn from - if they really want a career in movies.
As an actor, I loved Eddie Garcia in Tubog sa Ginto, where he portrayed a closeted gay married man, who falls in love with his driver portrayed by Mario O'Hara. Ang cute pa ni Jay Ilagan dito grabe! Jay portrayed his son.
Yes, there is a sex scene in the movie, this is a Lino Brocka movie after all and hindi sya malaswa. That's really how a closeted man would approach a young handsome guy i bed. It's very funny!
It's uncanny how Mr. Garcia plays the conflicted man part. You can see that he is a very sensitive actor and understands the conflicts that his character is going through as he tries to appear heterosexual when his wife is around, and becoming a total fag when alone with his boylet.
He played the role with dignity and did not make closet gay men appear as pathetic people.
Manoy, you will be sorely missed!

Movie Review: 'Rocketman' Soars Straight to My Heart

Parents with gay children should watch 'Rocketman' so they can see what possible damage they can do to their children if they continue to not love their children unconditionally.
I think it was brave for Elton John to say in this movie that his parents - both father and mother - never really loved him.
Not in the unconditional way parents should love their children.
I love how the script portrays Elton's parents as "I will love you only if........" and you can really feel Taron's pain as he shows his acting chops to navigate this minefield (Elton John is the executive producer of this movie).
There's this particularly heartbreaking scene where he meets his father (he is already world famous and very rich at this time) and yet his father did not even give him a hug - while at the same time, hugging and carrying his younger half-brothers. That broke my heart. Even with his immense wealth and popularity, he could not even buy his father's hug.
There's also this amazing scene towards the end of the movie, where already as an adult, he says to his parents "I will not permit you to talk about me like that in front of me anymore." (Or something like that)
This movie is also a lot of help to my current work.
Since 90% of my writing work nowadays is about music I appreciate 'Rocketman' in so many levels because #1 it has answered some niggling questions I've had about Elton John's musical style and #2 it has made me appreciate how fantastic Bernie Taupin is as a songwriter after seeing so much trashy songs today - with today's songwriters lacking in imagination and elegance in songwriting.
I have a few Elton John albums and if you listen closely to them you will notice that he has many songs arranged in a 'black' way or in an R&B manner - which as a young person before - I found a bit strange - because he is white and there are no black people in the production team that I see in the albums' sleeves.
I found the answer in the movie. Kaya pala, he can arrange his songs in that manner because as a young musician, he's had extensive experience playing with black performers. That is the only feasible explanation I can think of because the influence is unmistakable.
I have many favorite scenes in the movie and I am already sure Taron Egerton will get that Oscar Best Actor nomination. However, I also feel the lovely Jamie Bell should get a Best Supporting Actor nomination.
Any straight man who can say "I love you man" with so much feeling and with no malice - should get an Oscar! And he does it in two scenes in this movie. I just want to give Jamie Bell a hug after watching him here. Now, my respect for him has really gone deep! Btw, he plays Bernie Taupin, Elton John's long-time lyricist - and he's straight.
My favorite scene in the movie is when Taron sings 'Tiny Dancer'. I have my own interpretation of that scene and I did cry a bit because it struck me personally.

Comparing 'Rocketman' and 'Bohemian Rhapsody'

The time frame of the movie 'Rocketman' - the Elton John biopic ends at the time that I also discovered him as a 13-year old kid.

'I'm Still Standing' which is in the movie - was released in 1983, but I learned about him because of 'Sad Songs'. He went on to have several Top 10 songs in the US - and I'm glad he took to rehab because if he didn't, he would've been dead at that time - a fate many celebrities have suffered (Amy Winehouse, Kurt Cobain, Michael Jackson, Whitney Houston).

The drug-taking, alcoholic rock and roll star has really become cliche but it's still sad to see such talented people die because of their addiction.

That is just one part of the movie. If you are planning to compare it with Bohemian Rhapsody - you'd be surprised to find out that both movies were done by the same director - Dexter Fletcher. Fletcher finished the movie when the studio fired Bryan Singer.

All I can say though for comparison is that Rocketman has more heart than Bohemian Rhapsody. I guess because Elton John is an executive producer here, and he is still alive, so he can say what scenes can be placed in and what scenes should be cut.

Freddie Mercury is already dead and I don't think his bandmates would want to muddy his reputation by emphasizing the drug taking, sex orgies, alcoholism part of his life. That's why the movie did not focus on those negatives but instead, celebrated his music!

And the world responded with a 900 million dollar box-office!

Rocketman is R-13 and since it has overt gay scenes, it may not be screened in many countries that are not gay friendly including big markets like China.

Otherwise, both movies are crowd pleasers and their fans should be very happy with the resulting films.

Taron, Antonio, Leonardo: 2020 Oscar Best Actor Nominees - For Your Consideration

Now I know why the actresses in Hollywood are always complaining about actors getting all the good roles. It's only June yet I could already list three actors who have a good shot of getting that Oscar Best Actor nomination for 2020 (and none yet for the women, huhu).

And I can say that with confidence because the movies these three actors are in are either directed by or about previous Oscar winners.

Leo has already won this award, so I hope it's Brad Pitt who gets the Oscar this time, in hopefully, the supporting category. But he has to get nominated first. They appear in Quentin Tarantino's 'Once Upon A Time in Hollywood' and that guy has an enviable record for getting his actors nominated (and winning an Oscar) - so I won't be surprised if both Leo and Brad make it into the the final lists.

Pedro Almodovar is also well-loved in the Academy as he has two Oscars so Antonio Banderas will most likely get part of that love in his film "Pain and Glory'. Winning Best Actor in Cannes can help in keeping his name alive throughout the long voting season. Also, Banderas has many fans within the Academy like Madonna and Melanie Griffith, who I'm sure are both voters.

Then there's Taron Egerton who plays Elton John in Rocketman. Elton John has an Oscar for Best Song from The Lion King movie. That year, he had three songs nominated. That's how good The Lion King soundtrack was. So he's had Academy love before and with strong voter support from the music branch of the Academy which includes, again, Madonna, Lady Gaga, Bono of U2, Sam Smith, Adele - it would be impossible if Taron doesn't get nominated.

They banded together to give Bohemian Rhapsody a load of nominations last year and a Best Actor to Rami Malek, they may do it again this year for Rocketman.

Personally, I hope Antonio and Taron get into the list. Leo has won anyway, and he has been nominated several times as well, so give chance to others. But since Leo is a major star and the Academy needs high ratings, putting Leo in the red carpet is not a bad idea as well.

I feel pity for the newbie actors. They really have to give an unforgettable performance because the slots remaining is getting less and less.

Falling For Richard Madden After Seeing Him in 'Rocketman'

I have all the seasons of Game of Thrones but I haven't had motivation to watch it.

Till now.

I just came from watching Rocketman, and the first thing I do is google "Richard Madden". Since I don't watch GOT, I had no idea he was a king there but yes, I have heard of him.

He won Best Actor - Drama in this year's Golden Globes which is a category where for heavyweight Hollywood actorls like Bryan Cranston, Hugh Laurie and Jon Hamm. So I was a bit shocked that a young newbie would win it because Richard really had to have done something great to win it!

Anyway, I got my answer tonight while watching him in Rocketman. Once he appears onscreen, he has this presence that is hard to miss.

He plays a nasty role in the movie but I'm glad that Elton John allowed him and Taron Egerton (who plays Elton) to have a sex scene in the movie. There's also a blow*** scene with him. That mental picture I cannot get out of my head.

Whew, two of Britain's hottest actors making out on the big screen. That's worth the 300 pesos ticket. By the way, the MTRCB did not cut anything that's why the movie is R-13 here.

Now, I am a fan! I hope Bodyguard is in Netflix.

Laro: An Updated Version of Everyone's Favorite Activity - Sex

If you haven't had sex for sometime, this play, Laro, will fill your quota for quite a bit - even if it just means you watch other people do it.
Yes, the play is gay-themed but don't be misled by that.
It is actually based on an 1897 play by a Jewish-Austrian dramatist named Arthur Schnitzler.
Yes, 1897! And if you see the play in it's current gay-themed modern day interpretation, you will blush at how people have openly talked and had sex in the 1890s until today.
There is also a 1950 Best Oscar-nominated version of the play.
In the version I watched last night, everything is updated to the age of the Internet. It was actually fun to watch the actors (I've seen some of them in other local plays) be game and just romp around the stage.
The actors talk about sex and they actually have sex (acting of course) so watch it with an open mind. It might give you a hint or two with what you can do with your husband or wife or partner after you watch the play.
I particularly like the handcuff scene, it looks sexy onstage but in real life, scary LOL! Just substitute it with a silk scarf, it feels better on the skin.
If you've had sexual experience as long as mine (straight or not) there are many scenes here that will make you laugh! Some, I agree with, some scenes, I find a bit off - (since when does one pontificate before sex). Just f**k!
This version by Floy Quintos is very racy by our standards but I've seen and experienced racier stuff than this (maybe anyone who has been to Europe and sampled the scene there can attest to that).
As I said, if you haven't had a boy (or a man) touch you for sometime, watch this, have fun, and stifle your giggles.

2019 French Open Final - Women's Singles: Fascinating Play from Two Crafty Players

I know the finalists for this year's women's singles are virtually unknown to outsiders who don't follow women's tennis.

That is why I take issue with the RG organizers for their sexist policy of putting these ladies SF games in the lesser courts. I am sure that if Serena Williams were in these SF matches, she wouldn't be relegated to a lower court.

Takot lang nila sa tantrum ni Serena if that happens!

The organizers should respect the work these women put into this sport - so regardless whether they are marquee names or not, they should play at that grand slam's best court.

They deserve nothing less.

I have seen these ladies play through the fortnight and it's going to be one of the most interesting finals in FO's history because these ladies are not power players like Serena, Maria or Petra.

They mix their shots, keeping their opponents guessing their next shot. Imagine, Vondrousova's winning shot in the semi's was a drop shot!

Amazing!

This is Ash Barty's best chance to win a grand slam. But I will be cheering for the Czech teenager, Marketa Vondrousova.

Like me, she is perpetually smiling when she is playing. You can see that she is really enjoying herself out there, which is the main point of all this exercise.

French Open 2019: It's A Free For All In The Women's Game

Two teenagers have burst into the semi-finals in RG, American Amanda Anisimova defeated the current RG champion Simona Halep in a very confident win, without dropping a set! She looks fearless Shane Fabi! She reminds me of Jelena Ostapenko in '17.
She has a tougher opponent though in Ashleigh Barty, who by rank, is now the favorite to win this slam - a first for Australian women since Stosur's 2010 win.
On the other hand, Czech Marketa Vondrousova defeated the seasoned claycourter Petra Martic, also in another confident display.

She will play a very steady Brit in Johanna Konta who demolished last year's finalist in two sets. Their head to head is even at 1-1 but Konta just defeated Vondrousova in Rome. So it's revenge time for Vondrousova.
The only question now is will the nerves of the teenagers get the best of them when they are finally on the big stage?
Because skills wise, both of them got game.
I am rooting for an Anisimova - Konta final. Let's see how this pans out!
